flexSCAN and TeraRecon align to provide
Internet-based 3D-capable PACS for flexSCAN membership base
San Mateo, CA--November
26, 2001: TeraRecon and
flexSCAN announced their alignment on a joint project to offer flexSCAN
providers advanced post-processing workstations and an Internet-based
3D Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) for long-term
data storage and retrieval. The alliance between the two companies
comes on the opening of the Radiological Society of North America
(RSNA) exhibition in Chicago, November 25-30.
flexSCAN Inc. provides medical imaging operators
with low-risk access to scanning equipment through the company's strategic
alliance with Toshiba Medical Systems (www.toshiba.com/tams). TeraRecon
offers the Aquarius Workstation, an advanced post-processing system
with "end-to-end" support for imaging center management. TeraRecon
recently launched its unique AquariusNET 3D-capable PACS system which
operates over LAN, WAN or Internet infrastructures.
The alignment between flexSCAN and TeraRecon
will utilize Aquarius and AquariusNET with a flexSCAN proprietary
multi-media front-end as a component of flexSCAN's distributed imaging
offering, which will allow a remote radiologist to review images collected
from flexSCAN provider network imaging centers. Additionally, a consumer
multi-media interpretation of the whole body screening experience
will be available online with a user friendly flexSCAN interface applied
to TeraRecon's backbone. This technology allows a remote 3D review
at any Internet linked PC for referring physicians or patients themselves,
further empowering consumers and doctors.
"TeraRecon's mandate is to bring a complete
range of advanced clinical applications and workflow solutions for
the ever-changing needs of imaging professionals." stated Robert Taylor,
Ph.D., Executive Vice President of TeraRecon. "Both TeraRecon and
flexSCAN see a great opportunity to allow radiologists who are increasingly
becoming a sought-after resource, to connect efficiently and effectively
with the imaging centers who need their services. At the same time,
this alliance will enable flexSCAN provider centers to compete more
effectively in an increasingly competitive scanning market by providing
better services for referring physicians and patients themselves,
all made possible through TeraRecon's special and innovative product
portfolio."
"In choosing a technology partner for flexSCAN
we carefully considered the competitive offerings in the marketplace,"
said Thomas Banks, Chief Executive Officer of flexSCAN. "It became
increasingly clear to us that TeraRecon's technology incorporated
more than simply a way to read the images generated by a CT. Their
superiority in this arena is unquestioned." According to Banks, "TeraRecon
shares our vision to provide consumers user-friendly access to both
their personal healthcare data and diagnostic images while empowering
them to become proactive in their wellness. Additionally, our alliance
enables radiologists to enjoy cost effective access to an innovative
tele-radiology and long-term image storage solution." "This is a classic
win-win alliance," said Banks.
"flexSCAN brings to its members a total
and complete solution to opening a successful and low-risk imaging
center business. With Toshiba Medical Systems as our modality partner,
and TeraRecon in place for our center management, workstation, PACS
and internet distribution needs, we believe the advantage for imaging
center operators of electing to utilize flexSCAN for their new scanners
will be truly compelling" Said Banks.
